The first thing that most people need to do is to get hold of a provisional licence. You don't need to wait till your 17th birthday, you can get it up to 3 months in advance. When you have got your provisional it is time to look round for a driving school. Although all instructors have to pass strict tests with the DVSA, not all instructors are the same. Factors that you might want to look at are price, whether you want a male or female intructor, Facebook and Google reviews of the driving school, recommendations from your friends.
It is worth remembering that the cheapest driving school offering the best special offers is probably not going to be the best quality driving school. If they are trying to attract you by price it may be that they are not providing the best quality driving lessons.
You may need to book your lessons in advance. Most good quality driving schools are fully booked and many operate waiting lists. So don't wait till the last moment to book your lessons.
Once you are booked in to your driving school you will need to start work on your theory test. The test consists of 50 questions with a pass mark of 43 and a hazard perception test. You need to pass both parts at the same time and you cannot book your practical test until you have passed the theory.
Don't apply for your practical test until your instructor tells you that you are ready. The UK pass rate is around 50% and it would be higher if people waited till there instructor tells them they are ready before taking the test.
When you pass your test the examiner will send off for your full driving licence for you and it will arrive with you within 20 days.
